On April 3 through 6, 1979, the Society of Economic Geologists held amajor field conference on Tucson-area porphyry copper deposits, attendedby 198 people. The participants heard numerous talks, examined rocks attwo operating mines, and inspected surface exposures of one potentialmine. The conference was well timed with respect to increased interest inporphyry copper deposits (and in increased copper and molybdenumprices). Three days of the conference were spent in the field examiningporphyry copper geology in outcrop, and debating to what extent variousmodels of porphyry copper genesis explained the field observations. Asecond symposium followed on April 9-10, entitled, “ExplorationGeochemistry in the Basin and Range Province”, sponsored by theAssociation of Exploration Geochemists.
